Adaptation of The Conversation murder scene (2016) - sound design

This was a short scene that I worked on with a production team at uni. I was the sound designer, and also the prop maker and costume designer. I ensured that the sounds at the beginning of our adaptation were soft, almost inaudible, so that the audience turns the volume right up and leans in to listen to what Harry is trying to listen for (the people in the next room). I used a variety of sounds to emulate Harry’s movements such as his breathing, his jacket rustling, or the texture of the items being taken out of the toolbox that Harry has. Considering the sound in the original film is of utmost importance, both metaphorically and practically, I ensured that I layered as many sounds as possible to re-create the overall atmosphere of the scene. There is even a slight sound of the shower door shaking in the bathroom scene.

This layering of sounds amounts to the peak of the scene (and the soundtrack of the scene) where Harry sees the bloodied hand, and the uncomfortable cacophony of sound begins. Not only is Harry uncomfortable, anxious, and unable to face the murder next door, but so is the audience as they are frightened out of their seats because of the sudden change in volume and sound.
